Western Auto Building Sign, Kansas City, Missouri

This collage shows several stages of the flashing Western Auto Building sign, which is a downtown Kansas City, Missouri, icon. The sign shines nightly on top of the former corporate headquarters of Western Auto Supply Company at 2107 Grand Boulevard. The building was transformed into loft condominiums; Western Auto Supply Company—known more widely as Western Auto— supplied automobile parts and accessories. It operated about 1,200 stores across the United States. It was started in 1909 in Kansas City, Missouri, by George Pepperdine, who later founded Pepperdine University.
