Mission San Juan Capistrano is a Spanish mission in Southern California, located in present-day San Juan Capistrano. Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order founded the mission in 1776. San Juan Capistrano is home to the oldest building in California still in use, a chapel built in 1782. The Mission is best known for the annual “Return of the Swallows,” which is observed every March 19, which is Saint Joseph’s Day.
